Just gave a lightning talk about the #repairability wiki for India

I've been trying to teach my kids that anything worth buying is worth trying to #repair.

My son's Nerf gun quit working, so we took it apart. As expected, all the pieces exploded out, so it took a lot of work to understand how they go back together. This model is known for the latch mechanism breaking. Once I understood where the problem was, some PVC glue and a relocated screw, and it's working again!

Just repaired an audio mixer. A reverse polarity diode was shorting the positive and negative rails. Easy to confirm it was the diode by clipping on lead of it and confirming that the rails aren't connected anymore.

I'm more happy that the diode was both marked on the part and on the board, and that I happen to have a 4148 on hand to replace it with.

Took maybe 5 minutes to fix it, more to remove the case and put it back in the case.

Nothing quite like opening up your laptop to grab that pesky screw that's been rattling around loose in there for months, only to find that it is not the screw you expected and you have no idea where it's supposed to go... Oh well! Seems to be working fine without it.

He repairs his daughter's #iPhone 13, but complains about #repairability. At least this time he only came out with minor burns... and a repaired phone. Interesting the phone accepted a 3rd party module. And personally, I would have never thought of heating the components. I cringed all the way to the end.

I love it when I search for a part number and someone has done the research and written it on their blog in clear, concise notes:

"Correct o-ring size is ID 30 x CS 3 x OD 36.
ID 30 x CS 2.5 x OD 35 is too small.
ID 31 x CS 3.2 x OD 37.4 is too big."

So now instead of buying a part, I can just find a generic o-ring for a few cents.

I'm an Android guy but I recommend iPhones to the less-technical, and the rest of my family has IPhones. iFixit discusses ways to get a good Apple phone while saving money and not supporting the new phone market.

A replacement battery for my $2k laptop (2019) was $60. That's pretty good to eke another couple of years out of it! Will I get another 5 years out of it?? #repairability

So.... I've been running my dishwasher too cold in an attempt to save power... developed a fatberg in the drain line. That's an hour I won't get back, but at least it's fixed! Also, I replaced my laptop battery today rather than buying a new laptop (I bought the laptop BEFORE covid, but it's still going strong with Linux. Here are some lesser known differences between an open source #IoT project and a commercial IoT appliance:

1. Support - #OpenSource projects field questions. Actual humans, taking the time to understand your questions and answer them!
2. Repair - Again, people will help you fix things
3. Less #environmental impact - Fewer things ending up in the landfill on account of the #repairability, often times they have more localized production, less shipping, etc.
4. Customizability - #FOSS for the win
