Study reveals hidden role of medieval female scribes in manuscript production

For centuries, the image of a monk laboring on a manuscript has been the dominant portrayal of medieval scribal work. However, in a newly published study presented in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, an old truth is revealed: women played a significant role in manuscript production...

#Doorsday's child has far to go ... all the way to #Córdoba in fact.

This is a lovely old #door from the Mosque-Cathedral or #Mezquita with details of #MoorishArchitecture. In fact, it's one of the oldest surviving gates of the former mosque! The door's decoration dates back to 855 when it was known as Bab al-Wuzara ("Viziers' Gate"). Lots of Al-Andalus state officials used to enter the mosque here. The Great Mosque of Córdoba was converted into a Catholic #cathedral in the 13th century. It's a World Heritage Site since 1984.

🔔 Ring Ring! 🔔 It's #Doorsday!

Here we have the front door to Casa Caccianemici in Bologna. Last week, for window Friday, I showed you one of its windows.
Some of the building dates back to the 13th century, other parts to the 15th century. It used to be home to the Passapoveri tower. "Caccianemici" means "to throw out/get rid of enemies" - so I guess as long as you are on good terms with the homeowners, who were the Caccianemici, you're fine! 😂

I look forward to the Feminist Lecture Program's events every week. Tomorrow's pay-what-you-can lecture is about abortion in the Middle Ages.

outsavvy.com/event/24283/by-ho

Whether you attend live or book the recording only, you have access to the lecture for a week.

OutSavvyBy Hook or by Crook: Abortions in the Middle Ages Tickets - - OutSavvyFLP welcomes back Noam Yadin Evron for a timely and important lecture on the medieval history of abortion… CLASS DESCRIPTION In the Medieval world, as in the modern one, abortion and contraception were a part of life. The fact that abortions were performed, and the methods used to perform them, are evident in legal, religious, and medical documents, both textual and visual. Those who administered them, as well as those who underwent them, came from all walks of life, and in either case, did so with significant risk. Tracing the practice of Medieval abortions is difficult, and the evidence is not always forthcoming. But finding it allows us to trace silent networks of solidarity, agency, and care. Then as now, not everyone saw the termination of pregnancy as a legitimate thing. On a theoretical and moral level, we see questions like: Who has the authority to control the progression of a pregnancy? When does a foetus become a person? Who is the main person affected by an act of abortion? The answers to these questions were far from unanimous. This lecture will introduce both the discussion on and the reality of abortions in the European Middle Ages. It will ask what we can learn about the attitudes towards women, sexuality, and authority from these debates and practices. It will also challenge the concept that the growing threat in the global North of restricting access to abortions or forbidding them altogether is “Medieval”, as it is so often referred to. These practices are not without their historical precedents, but their contemporary manifestation, especially in the US, is completely modern, and in many ways significantly more extreme than their assumed Medieval roots. ABOUT OUR LECTURER Noam Yadin-Evron is a lecturer of art history and museum studies. Her PhD looked at the early Church conceptions of wealth and poverty, and how these were manifested and embodied in its art. Her MA is in Medieval art history and gender studies. Via dell'Archiginnasio

On your left there is Palazzo dell'Archiginnasio on your right, a sliver of the Basilica to San Petronio.
Construction started on the Basilica in 1390 - alla Sagrada Familia style - they were still building it in 1514 when a new architect was brought on to build the dome. Legend has it that Pope Pius IV halted the construction of the "megalomaniac dream" and encouraged the building of the Archiginnasio.
The Archiginnasio is one of the most important buildings in Bologna. It was the main hub of the University it now houses the Anatomical Theatre and The Archeological Museum.
We got the Archiginnasio but the Basilica has never been finished. 😂

"Open The Noor!" It's #Doorsday! 🚪
Being a bit cheeky with this door - as it's a door within a door - Doorception ✨

The open door is part of Il Palazzo Monti Poi Salina, this version - built between 1736 and 1738. One of the courtyards has a well dating back to the 14th century, oh and the palazzo was used as a bomb shelter during World War II.
There's like a web designer office or something across the road - I don't know much about it to be honest! 😂

... Thursday, I don't care about you, it's #Doorsday I'm in love! 😍

Another local beauty, this time the #Brick #Gothic castle #church of #Wolmirstedt, built in 1480. Apparently the most southern example of northern #BrickGothic, huh. It's all humble red bricks and a plain door, but when you look up - wow!

Yesterday, #KielScales25 was about #RaisingWaters, obsolete conecpts in Archaeology, #ScalesofTransformation or contacts between Danes and Slavs in the #MiddleAges. The day ended with an inspiring keynote lecture by Carla Jaimes Betancourt on urbanism and landscape engineering in Pre-Columbian Bolivia. Today we are continuing some topics, but also adding new ones, for example #AIinArchaeology. The whole programme: events.kielconference25.smart-
