Immune amnesia: Why even mild measles infections can lead to serious disease later

Getting measles doesn’t confer benefits on the immune system — in fact, it’s just the opposite.
Even a mild case of measles destroys the memory cells that confer resistance on bugs the patient has previously fought, in what doctors call “immune amnesia.”
A measles outbreak has infected nearly 500 people in 19 states, including California. Vaccinations prevent both the measles and the subsequent loss of immune protections.

It's true. It's happened to me in the time before a measles vaccine. I got very ill...Hospitalized. I also went through a series of very painful gamma globulin shots to get some immunity built back up. Don't let this happen to your child...or you.

It might be worth considering the #adultMMR if you have no record of having had it as a child. In the UK you can request it at your GP surgery.

The reason for me having the MMR in my 60s was due to 1) not having the vaccination earlier 2) a chronic health condition and 3) the need to retain protection against other viruses like Covid.

#immuneAmnesia after a measles infection is not a new phenomenon:

"Essentially, when you're infected with #measles, your immune system abruptly forgets every pathogen it's ever encountered before"

"'Measles parties' are a really, really bad idea.
Do not expose your child to measles.
Get your child vaccinated. The MMR vaccine is safe and effective."
