boxd.itA ★★★★ review of Stir of Echoes (1999)True confession time: I know this is not the most popular of takes, but I would watch Stir Of Echoes over The Sixth Sense nine times out of 10. I hate even comparing the two, but David Koepp’s ghost story is inextricable from M. Night Shyamalan’s. Both films came out within a month of each other and focus on neighborhoods in distinctive Northern US cities where a man and a child find themselves encountering the spirits of those passed on. Pretending there isn’t a comparison to be made is just denying the ghost at the end of your fingertips. And

Stir of Echoes (1999)
Directed by David Koepp

Tom (Kevin Bacon), a very regular guy living in a very decent neighborhood, finds out that something not so decent happened in the home he's renting from one of his neighbors.

Based on a novel by Richard Matheson, this one was unfairly overlooked on release. It's very affecting and features some terrific performances.

A man in jeans and no shirt is digging in a backyard. Behind him is the house he lives in and a red barbeque grill.
