A slight deviation from the usual
#JackAndMaryArchive this morning to mark the 80th anniversary of
#VEDay.
This photo was taken around a week before VE Day and shows German soldiers crossing the Elbe river as they surrender to British forces towards the end of
#WorldWar2.
I was first shown this photo in the form of a newspaper clipping where a name had been written in biro above a soldier's head: Bob Hearn, my paternal grandfather. There he is, sitting on the back of a Jeep looking directly at the camera with the cheeky looking half smile that appears in other photos in the family archive.
I've written a whole blog post about my wartime ancestors (
https://cjhearn.co.uk/blog/ancestors-at-war) and that also includes how I managed to track down this higher resolution copy which now hangs with pride on my office wall.
