What a great post for #NationalMothWeek
It’s National Moth Week, July 20-28, to celebrate the beauty, lifecycles and habitat of moths, so I’m reposting my eclipse of moths (the delightful term of venery for a group of moths) and also for my #InsertAnInvert2024 wildcard week.
This hand-printed lino block print shows 5 of the noctural moths of Ontario in front of the moon at a lunar eclipse. The 5 moths are: the gorgeous green Luna moth (Actias luna), 1/
A favourite for #NationalMothWeek -This is a hand-printed lino block print of the charming Hummingbird Clearwing moth (Hermaris thysbe) seeking pollen from cherry blossoms. The olive-headed burgundy moth has transparent wings (though colour can be variable). It beats its wings rapidly to hover above flowers, like a hummingbird, meaning it is often confused with a hummingbird or bee. 1/n

A cute little rosy maple moth for #NationalMothWeek
The delightfully fluffy and cheerfully coloured Rosy Maple Moth (Dryocampa rubicunda) is printed in lemon yellow and pink, with collaged pink paper, with charcoal eye and orange anteanna on delicate Japanese gampi paper with some bark inclusions.
Am I the only one on Mastodon looking forward to #NationalMothWeek (20-28 July)? More info here: https://nationalmothweek.org/
Today marks the end of #NationalMothWeek, and I will post several more banger #Moths before returning to my regular variety of #macro content. This is the Ornate Bella Moth, #Utetheisa ornatrix, a colorful moth that I often see visiting Autumn wildflowers.
#mothstodon
A bonus post for the #nationalMothWeek. This is another banger of a moth, the Giant Leopard #Moth, #Hypercompe scribonia. The dark markings as seen in the closeup of the head are iridescent blue, also note the spots can either be open or filled.
Leaf mine of the Poison Ivy Leafminer Moth (Cameraria guttifinitella) for #NationalMothWeek. I'm curious to try rearing an adult from a mine but I've had enough experience with poison ivy to be hesitant.

Te #Mothening continues! For this the 7th day of ' #NationalMothWeek We go large with the Polyphemus #Moth#Anthera polyphemus spectacular member of the #Saturnidae family. This is a male, the feathery antennae help him find the pheromones of a female.
Reticulated fruitworm moth (Cenopis reticulatana). The beak-like structure that extends beyond the head is composed of the labial palpi, sensory organs that have a long list of abilities including detection of CO2. Females tend to have larger palps, and I gather that that might be because they are the ones who use CO2 to assess host plant quality during oviposition. #tortricidae #moth #moths #mothtodon #mothing #lepidoptera #insects #entomology #nature #NationalMothWeek
Here's a lesser maple spanworm from last weekend's moth night. BugGuide says that the Latin binomial, Macaria pustularia, references the puss-like markings along the forewing. #moth #moths #mothtodon #mothing #lepidoptera #insects #entomology #nature #NationalMothWeek
Just received my copy of John Himmelman's Discovering Moths. Looks fantastic. #moth #moths #mothtodon #mothing #lepidoptera #insects #entomology #nature #NationalMothWeek #book #NaturalHistory
For today's #NationalMothWeek I present some fun members of the Grass #Moths, family Crambidae.

2. Zebra Conchylodes Moth Conchylodes ovulalis
3. Hawaiian Beet Webworm Moth Spoladea recurvalis
4. Pondside Crambid Moth Elophila icciusalis
Bats use ultrasonic pulses to detect moths, but not all moths are defenceless. Some emit ultrasonic signals of their own to startle bats and chase them away https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/science/moths-enlist-additional-troops-in-an-evolutionary-arms-race #NationalMothWeek
Apparently it's national moth week - who knew?! Unclear exactly which nation it's "national" to though! #NationalMothWeek #NMW
