Orange Door

Recently I was on a class trip out to Locke California on the Sacramento River Delta. The goal was to emulate a couple of old time photographers, William Quisenberry and Walker Evans. Quisenberry emulated Walker Evans for many years and the style was to shoot very one dimensional paying more attention to detail and textures.
I found this building a few miles down the road.

Orange Door This is an image that I shot in the process of trying to emulate a couple of classic photographers, William Quisenberry and Walker Evans. Both are known to shoot images that are pretty much two dimensional without much depth. This is the back of an old building found out in the Sacramento River Delta in the town of Locke. The siding on the building is all corrugated steel, some of the pieces are showing different levels of rust giving it a very industrial look. There are some odds and ends on the ground like a hose and an old planter along with various other items. What caught my eye on this image is the reddish/orange door in the lower left hand corner.

Rockville Reflections

Rockville Regional Park is one of my regular hiking destinations near home.
The park has a range of trails from easy to difficult.
Near the end of summer this little pond can dry up into basically large mud puddle. I captured this on a beautiful spring day where the wind was completely absent. The pond reflected as almost a perfect mirror.

Rockville Reflection This image was captured at Rockville Regional Park just outside of Fairfield, Ca. This is a square format image. The foreground is of a seasonal pond. There is absolutely no wind when I captured this image and the pond is completely still creating a mirror effect, reflecting everything without a ripple. On the right edge of the image the top part of the pond comes into view. This follows around to the left side of the image. Beyond the pond the grass is growing a brilliant green as the area has had plenty of rain. Onn the right is a large oak tree that towers a good 10 feet above all the others. This tree as well as others reflect into the pond as does the sky with wispy clouds covering.

Dixon Grain Elevator

Grain elevators to me are like old boats. They seem to develop their own unique look and character as they age and I don't think any two are the same.
So I purchased a new lens for my camera and I wanted to give a try. This grain elevator is roughly 20 miles from my home and I always wanted to explore the area and the elevator itself.

Dixon Grain Elevator This is an image of a Grain Elevator located in Dixon California. Grain elevators to me are a lot like boats. They seem to have their own style and character. This one has some kind of warehouse or office located on top of the large cylindrical towers. There are other buildings in the background and the foreground is an empty parking lot. The sun is just starting to breach the horizon off to the right of the image creating a nice warm pinkish glow.

Bodie Mercantile

Bodie California is located in the Eastern Sierras and is the official ghost town of California. It is listed as a State Historical Park, earning that designation in 1962 when the state took over.
During the Gold Rush days, Bodie was a bustling small city of between 7 and 10 thousand residents. Multiple events including a couple of fires spelt the end of Bodie.

Bodie Mercantile Captured at the Bodie State Historic Park. This is an image, a look into the past, of the interior of the Bodie Mercantile. This image is basically a time stamp of the early 1930's. After easy gold was gone, the Bodie Railroad shut down and then with 2 major fires destroyed most of the town, things shut down. Inside this shop are old fashion, wooden telephone on the far wall. The old cash register sits on the counter. Behind the counter there are still a number of canned goods, bottles, and tins holding various items. All of these items are covered with nearly 100 years of dust.

Last Light Lake Tahoe

It's pretty amazing how fast the sun drops in the sky when your in the mountains. One minute I was relaxing with my wife, we were commenting on a wedding that was taking place down the beach away. By the time I noticed that the sun was setting I had to rush to get my gear together and set up on this dock in South Lake.

Last Light Lake Tahoe Last Light Lake Tahoe is an image I captured while visiting Lake Tahoe. In the foreground is a dock that runs out towards right edge of the image. The lake color changes from a dark blue to a reddish/orange color. The silhouette of the mountains split the lake and the sky. The sky is a brilliant yellow at the horizon that fades to orange and then blue. Out on the lake there are some boats moored out at their buoys.

Frosty

This image was captured right after a decent snow storm came through Yosemite Valley.
This beautiful snow covered tree stood out against the muted evergreens behind them.
The snow was unbroken and presents a beautiful white carpet leading back to the tree.
The oak, with it's broad branches seemed to have captured more snow than those around it.

Frosty This is an image of a snow-covered oak tree captured in Yosemite Valley just after a winter storm moved through the valley. The foreground of the image is a white carpet of undisturbed snow. The oak tree "Frosty" is framed on the left by the branches of another oak. The right side of Frosty is framed by some taller Douglas Fir pine trees. Snow pretty much covers everything but the colors of the tree fight to break through. You can see a nice green under the branches of the pine trees. If you look at "Frosty" you can see hints of brown on the branches and trunk.

Solitaire

This was captured in February during the middle of winter.
Camped in Yosemite Valley a snow storm moved through the valley dumping about 8 inches of snow.
As I made my way through the village in the morning I saw this fabulous snow covered oak tree and decided it would make a good subject for a photo. It's not really solitaire but it did stand out from al the other trees around.

Solitaire I captured this magnificent snow covered oak tree after a winter storm moved through Yosemite Valley overnight. The foreground of the image is an unbroken field of snow, pure as can be. The large oak tree is framed on both sides by a few smaller snow covered trees. The large oak towers over the other trees in the area. The branches are heavy with snow. The sky in the background is gray and overcast. This is a color image but the snow and low clouds give it an appearance of being a black and white image unless looked at closely you can see some color in the trunks of the trees.

Three Brothers and Bridalveil
One of my favorite vistas in Yosemite Valley is the tunnel view. Especially on days like the day I captured this image. We had camped in the valley the previous night and it snowed most of the night.
This image shows the magic of winter in Yosemite Valley with Bridalveil Falls flowing in the trough of the valley of the Three Brothers.

Three Brothers and Bridalveil Winter in Yosemite Valley often brings out some stunning views. This is an image of the Three Brothers rock formation in Yosemite Valley. This was captured as a snowstorm was clearing after an overnight storm. The foreground consist of snow covered pine trees, mostly Douglass Fir trees. The branches are all weighed down by the heavy, wet snow. The Three Brothers rise above the tree line. Snow is covering everything at the higher elevation. There are a couple clouds in the background and one is slightly covering one of the peaks. Behind the clouds is a brilliant blue sky.

Waterfall Glow

I've spent many hours at the bottom of Yosemite Falls watching as the water crashes down onto the rocks and boulders at the base of the falls.
This was the first time that I was able to see the rainbow at the very bottom of the lower falls. In the foreground you can see hints of green in the mist fading to yellow giving the appearance of a glow coming out of the mist.

Waterfall Glow This is an image of the Lower Yosemite Falls base. Located of course in Yosemite Valley. This is a closeup image of the falls, only focusing on the last 50-75 feet. The fall is framed on both sides with dark gray/brown granite cliffs. The water kicks out just a bit as it hits the bottom and that is where the focus of the image is. You can see the affects of water hitting off the rocks and shooting up and to the side creating almost waves of water coming down. At the bottom of the falls there is the beginning of a rainbow that is forming as the morning sun is rising in the sky.

Firefall

Firefall is a relative newly discovered phenomenon discovered in Yosemite National Park not to be confused with the old firefall that was manmade.
I've been to Yosemite on 8 different occasions trying to capture this and have been skunked 7 times. This year everything finally lined up properly and this was the results I achieved.

Firefall. This is an image of what is known as the Firefall in Yosemite Valley. The proper name of Firefall is Horsetail Falls. In Mid-February if everything is in alignment you can see this amazing waterfall turn into what appears as a ribbon of Lava coming off the mountain. For this to happen many things need to line up, most importantly a clear sky in the afternoon. The falls come off an area to the right of El Capitan, pretty much a shear cliff. The sun as it sets across the valley drops into an area that sends a focused beam of light directly onto the rocks beside the waterfall reflecting the light onto the falls giving the water this amazing orange glow.

Portrait of Yosemite Falls

One thing you will never see on a busy summer day in Yosemite Valley is the frozen beard that develops over night as the mist from the falls gets blown against the granite and freezes against the side of the cliffs that make up Yosemite Valley.
Another thing that you may never see in the summer is an empty hiking path to the base of Yosemite Falls.

Portrait Of Yosemite Falls This is an image of Yosemite Falls captured on an early winter morning from the trailhead to the lower falls. The trail up to the falls as few people travel to Yosemite during the winter compared to the summer. There is some fresh snow on the ground from a light dusting overnight. The towering falls are loosely framed with some towering Douglass Fir trees. The falls sit prominently near the center of the image. The Upper Falls at 2425 feet drops to the hidden middle falls section and then comes back into the frame at the top of the Lower Falls. At the top of the falls you can see ice and snow that forms overnight during the colder hours.

Mariposa Grove

Just inside the south gate of Yosemite by roughly 1/2 mile you find the parking lot to this magnificent grove of redwoods. From the parking lot there are a number hiking trails that one can take that are easy to moderate hikes.
I had this whole grove mostly to myself. I had time to shoot undisturbed and completely enjoyed the experience.

Mariposa Grove This is an image of a couple of giant redwood trees captured in Mariposa Grove in Yosemite National Park. The main focus of the image is a large redwood tree left center in the image. The bark of the tree looks very thick and the tree is extremely tall. If you look at the lower left corner of the image you can see a split rail fence that helps give you an idea of just how large these trees truly are. To the right of the main subject is another redwood, slightly smaller than the main subject. Between the two is yet a younger, smaller tree. The forest floor is covered in redwood needles and small branches. The background shows a smaller forest of trees.

Dogwood Dream

In Yosemite Valley you can explore nature from the micro level to the macro-grand level.
In the springtime the dogwoods along the Merced River bloom in large white flowers and the river serves a wonderful backdrop for these beautiful flowers.
This image was digitally converted with a painterly effect to give it a soft, colorful dreamlike look.

Dogwood Dream This beautiful dogwood flower was captured hanging over the Merced River in Yosemite Valley. The thin branch comes into the image near the top right corner seemingly coming out of nowhere. The branch bends down to the lower center part of the image due to the weight of the large flower on a thin branch. There are a few leaves on the branch as well. The background is a bokeh pattern of blue circles due to the light being pulled from the Merced River. I have processed this order to give the colors somewhat of a fluorescent glow.

Wildcat Falls In Color

Wildcat Falls is a small waterfall by Yosemite standards. This fall would be considered large in most places as it falls 630 feet.
One of my favorite features of this waterfall is the lack of crowd that surrounds many of the other falls in the valley. One can sit below the fall and take in the sounds of the fall and the nature that is all around.

Wildcat Falls In Color This beautiful waterfall is located in Yosemite Valley just a couple of miles from the western entrance on highway 140. This view will never be seen again as a large boulder landed essentially where the left corner of this image is. The falls come into view at the top left corner of the image. The water drops straight down on the right hand side. On the left side of the image the falls fan out to fill the frame. Captured with a slow shutter speed to give the water that nice silky feel. The lush green forest frames the top right of the image.

Waterfall in Black and White

Wildcat Falls is a small waterfall located off of highway 140 in Yosemite National Park. The fall is relatively unknown as the lower portion of the falls is tucked in behind some trees and because there are not any formal hiking trails leading up to it.
This view, now, is forever obstructed by a large boulder that fell from higher elevations.

Waterfall in Black and White This is a black and white image of Wildcat Falls located in beautiful Yosemite Valley off of highway 140. This image is gone forever now as a large boulder fall into the middle of the pool about 20 feet from the bottom of the waterfall. In this image the falls start in the upper right hand corner falling to the left lower center until finally coming back to the right. I used a slow shutter on this image to give the water a nice soft look as it stumbles down over the rocks.

Captured from the Tunnel View parking lot in Yosemite National Park.
Here you see Bridalveil falls center right. Bridalveil Falls is 617 feet from top to bottom and generally flows year round in the park.
On the left of this image is the base of El Capitan. El Capitan is a granite monolith and is one of the parks major attractions.

Enchanted Valley in Black and White This is an image of Yosemite National Park captured as a winter storm begins to clear from the valley. It had snowed all night. This was captured from the Tunnel View parking lot overlooking the valley. On the right side of the image is Bridalveil Falls dropping 600+ feet into the valley. On the right is El Capitan even though most of it is hidden by the low clouds in the valley. The valley itself has some low clouds hung up at the tops of the tall Douglas Firs that populate the valley

Bridalveil III

Bridalveil Falls in Yosemite Valley is one of many major waterfalls throughout Yosemite National Park. Although not as tall as Yosemite Falls this waterfall is one of my favorites.
Less than a third as tall as Yosemite Falls, Bridalveil Falls is generally the first major waterfall seen as you drive into Yosemite Valley.

Bridalveil III This is an image of Bridalveil Falls located in Yosemite Valley. This was captured on a warm winter day. The water is barely flowing as the snow in the high country hasn't had a chance to melt. The waterfall starts in the center left of the image. The rocks on both sides of the fall are a gray granite. As you move out to the margins, the rocks are covered in a brown earth color that just hasn't been rinsed off from the waterfall. You can see the top of some trees that are located near the waterfall. Some clouds are starting to move out over the cliffs.

Up the Creek

Most people that stop at Cascade Falls get out of their car, walk across the highway, view the falls and drive off..
This small branch of the creek comes down off the mountain, flows under a small bridge and then flows roughly 100 yards, as seen here, before dropping roughly another 800 feet to the valley floor. There is an un-official trail leading down here from the parking lot.

Up The Creek This is an image of Cascade Falls located off of HWY 120 in Yosemite National Park. This section of the falls consist of a series of drops as is comes down off of the mountainside. There are a number of large boulders that force the water one direction or the other. The creek is framed on the left by green trees with the branches reaching to the edge of the creek. The right side of the creek has a rocky bank. There is a dead tree that has fallen over the creek further into the frame.

Lower Yosemite Falls Through The Trees.

One of my favorite places to be is sitting below Yosemite Falls. The waterfall is so majestic and powerful and the water runs clean and cool.
This image captures the lower portion of the middle falls and the complete lower falls as shot from the path leading up to the bottom of the waterfall.

Lower Yosemite Falls Through The Trees This is an image of Lower Yosemite Falls captured through the trees in Beautiful Yosemite Valley. The trees, mostly Douglass Fir lead your eyes up to the falls. The perspective is that the trees are shorter further into the image. The waterfall drops down through the center of the image. The middle section of the falls ends near the top of the image and the final drop is in full view.

Darwin Falls

Darwin Falls is a small gem of a waterfall that can be found running year around in Death Valley National Park. That's right, a waterfall in Death Valley.
We were fortunate to be able to spend some solitary time at the falls as one group left the area as we arrived.
This is a beautiful little waterfall. The hike is highly recommended but start early and bring plenty of water.

Darwin Falls This beautiful little spring fed waterfall is located in Death Valley National Park and it flows year round. The waterfall is framed on the lower left with same tall reeds. On the lower right is a tree with this green leaves. On the bottom right center is a water logged log right at the surface of the water. This log points your eye to the waterfall. The waterfall flows from the top through a narrow channel in the rocks. The water comes down to a larger rock that splits the waterfall into two separate channels. There is some bright green moss on the rocks by the waterfall.
