We're going to have to rebuild civilization, aren't we? Shit. Well, good thing I know how to use a #SlideRule.

Lo encontré en una tienda de segunda mano. Resulta difícil creer que la gente usara este aparato para hacer cálculos reales y hacer volar aviones. #regladecalculo #SlideRule #computoanalogico
Rediscovered my Slide Rule given to me decades ago from Elgin High School, Moray, Scotland.
Along with an Instruction Manual.
Time to learn!

When I built my first time machine, these and a set of log tables, were the only computational tools I used.
The Fowler Calculator. Manufactured in Sale England.
The Unique Dualistic Slide Rule. Also made in England.
Showing my age I know but here is my first ever ‘scientific calculator’. With no batteries to run out, the slide rule was the perfect solution to carrying out engineering and scientific calculations. #SlideRule #calculator

The 19th Century #engineers, our forebears, overbuilt their products, because the #mathematical techniques, though already fully mature and accurate, were not as precise, due to the use of the #SlideRule. In the second half of the 20th Century, my generation of engineers did their best to exploit the powers of #computing to lengthen MTBF and to extend product lives.
In the 21st Century, though, engineering seems to have become obsessed with the use of #AI and other advanced computing technologies to predict accurately and precisely when products will fail, so as to aid the actuaries set the #warranties that expire just before the products fail.
#Engineering is a licensed profession with its own regulations and ethical codes. Unlike businessmen, we must not permit ourselves to kneel at the alter of profits.
Re-started a small societal-collapse preparedness practice: learning to use the #SlideRule. Growing my own food might be more important… but at least I’ll be able to calculate things :)
So it’s a Circular #SlideRule ! Outstanding!

After looking for a long time, I finally found this #Sliderule, which belonged to my late father. Some of you will know that these #devices were used, before the advent of digital #Calculators, to perform #arithmetic operations such as #multiplication and #division to about three significant figures, by #scientists and #engineers.

According to the #sliderule manual, I'm supposed to multiply and divide with the C & D scales. The trouble is i am only getting the correct answers with the A & B scales. On the left, I'm multiplying 2 x 2 and getting 4.4. On the right, it's 4.
I have decided to make a small, circular #SlideRule part of my everyday carry.
I will not be taking questions at this time.
#HeyCohost I don't think I had many followers over there, but if you liked my #SlideRule posts there last year, follow me here and I'll repost them to a blog or something soon. happy to follow back too
Yup! A circular slide rule is a little unconventional, but has the advantage of never “going off scale”, where your answer is of the end of the rule. For example, when multiplying 4 by 6.
If you want a conventional, linear, #SlideRule, I don’t think anyone is still making them. You’ll have to look at eBay or ISRM. There are plenty of nice, affordable used #SlideRules to be found!
Look for “Concise” on Amazon. They are a Japanese company that appears to be the last company manufacturing #SlideRules.
You can also check http://sliderulemuseum.com/SRM_Duplicates.shtml to “adopt” an extra #SlideRule from their collection.
Also, it’s pretty easy to find an affordable #SlideRule on EBay.
Welcome to the hobby!
Found in a thrift store. Hard to believe that people used to use this actual thing to do actual calculations to fly actual planes. #SlideRule #AnalogComputer #aviation
I collect slide rules, and my mother-in-law just gave me a nice addition to the collection -- which might be morphing into traditional mechanical calculating devices...it's a soroban, which seems to be a form of portable abacus. Very cool.
