👀 😥 In Toronto Library contract negotiations "Key bargaining points were 'safety & security', 'harassment' & 'workplace violence.' … public libraries have been pressed into service as de facto homeless shelters & support service locations. They’ve become hotbeds of people in crisis.

It's #homelessness all the way down."

Trump is about to make the Toronto homelessness crisis worse:

One of the few bonuses of working in a university is that you get full access to the library. I wanted to read an obscure article from an obscure journal printed in 1985. No electronic copy exists online. I requested it on the uni library website and someone went down to the archive, found the article, scanned it and emailed it to me a couple of hours later. Now I've got a taste for it. I'll be sending them off to scan all manner of old articles #library #libraries #Librarians #archive #archiving #research

Journal of Librarianship and Scholarly CommunicationThe Open Book Environment (OBE) Dashboard: A Tool for Increasing Publisher Transparency for Authors, Librarians, and the Scholarly CommunityIntroduction: The Open Book Environment (OBE) Dashboard is introduced as a pioneering tool aimed at fostering transparency and clarity in the realm of open access book publishing. In response to the growing need for accessible information for authors, librarians, and stakeholders, this dashboard aggregates data from a multitude of publishers into a centralized platform. Description of Program/Service: Employing a comprehensive set of criteria, including pricing for book processing charges (BPCs), licensing options, editorial quality statements, and self-archiving policies, the Dashboard evaluates publisher transparency. Through a color-coded system, it visually represents the degree of openness exhibited by each publisher, empowering authors to make informed decisions about where to publish their work. Next Steps: Looking ahead, the Dashboard’s dynamic nature allows for continuous updates, facilitating its role as an agent for positive change within the scholarly publishing community. As a versatile resource, the OBE Dashboard holds promise in enhancing efficiency, transparency, and accountability in open access book publishing. We call on members of the worldwide scholarly communication ecosystems – researchers, policy-makers, scholarly societies, libraries, higher education and research institutions, publishers, funders, and others – to sign this Declaration to publicly condemn and resist the censorship of academic research. All are welcome to sign, from any nation or occupation. Please sign in your own name and/or on behalf of your organization. By signing, you commit to acting on at least one of these four recommendations: Support instances of resistance to U.S. government censorship.
