Good morning Fedi friends!

I hope you had a nice weekend.

After backing up my two VPSs I am now staring at my #YunoHost dashboard thinking: now what?

It feels a little odd not to have to tackle any pressing self-hosting issues. Everything seems to be working well, including my manual installation of Ghost on a second (Ubuntu) VPS.

I'm now in maintenance mode.

I must confess in the past 24 hours I have spent some time browsing @yunohost 's app catalogue. So many fascinating things in there! But I am exercising restraint (for now, LOL!)

I'm very grateful for all the software I'm currently self-hosting.

I'm highly aware of my privilege and how lucky I am to be doing all this. But can I confess I'm a little bored? Thankfully I may have another big project on the horizon: upgrading my VPS and installing / self-hosting #PeerTube. But that will be for another week. Resting now and enjoying this sense of empowerment / digital sovereignty. Very grateful to be in this position.

Oh #PeerTube, you are making me do mental somersaults as I strategize about the best way to self-host my videos.

This newbie wants to ask: how many VPS’s are too many for someone who has little coding experience and has been self-hosting for just 3 months?

Fedi friends, I’m thinking of signing up for a THIRD VPS

Why?

My current setup:

5€/month Debian VPS with #YunoHost, where I’m self-hosting #GoToSocial (this account), #Friendica, #Pixelfed, #Fail2Ban and #LinkStack.
5€/month Ubuntu VPS where I am self-hosting my (upcoming) #Ghost blog (this will make me save a ton, compared to my current Ghost Pro plan).

Back to PeerTube: I could easily upgrade my #Debian VPS and install it there - the costs would be minimal and I would double my RAM and storage. But I am afraid of PeerTube’s consumption when it comes to bandwidth. As in: if I upload a video that for some reason becomes really popular, or if a bad actor decides to DDOS my channel, would that take down all my other self-hosted Fediverse instances? Since they are on the same VPS?

I could limit potential issues by having a dedicated VPS just for PeerTube.

What would you do?

And do you have recommendations for Europe-based VPS’s with affordable plans? (aside from Hostinger) I was thinking of #Hetzner…

Monday morning, which means: backing up my #YunoHost setup.

I see that #GoToSocial has an update available but I'm too scared to upgrade it. Having my 4th cup of espresso and working up the courage to do it (I hear it takes a looong time). Hoping I don't break anything ​

In other news, I am LOVING my #LinkStack and having a glimpse into the links that are the most popular (LinkStack offers you a ranking in reverse order of the most clicked links when you log into their dashboard). I was never an avid #Twitter user, so "switching" to #Mastodon during the #eXit movement was quite easy (my last tweet was from mid 2020, and there where only 12 answers to other posts form 2020 till my switch to here in 2022).

However, getting rid of the #Meta services feels more difficult. Non the less, I made that cut now, as well, and am quite proud of myself for it.

On the way, I found a service that is not part of the #fediverse but as a #opensource product with #selfhosting capability at least in the close vincinity;

@linkstack is a replacement for the proprietary and profit-oriented LinkTree. You can run a #selfhosted instance of it, or choose from one of the nearly 20 different public instances listed at their website. I'm loving it, so far - and especially now, while switching away from all my proprietary social networks it is a great help to poiting people with one single link, to where they can find you in future.

Plus - as many other (proprietary) services do not yet support links to mastodon, pixelfed, and others ( #LinkStack btw *does*!), but all of them usually have a homepage field, this is the one URL that will help you out in these instances.

Monday morning, which means: backing up my #YunoHost setup. This backup file was 5.5GB, which breaks down like this (from biggest to smallest):

- #GoToSocial: 3.3GB
- #GhostIO: 1GB
- #Pixelfed: 700MB
- #Friendica: 237MB
- #LinkStack: 91MB

I'm really tempted to remove the bridge to #Bluesky. Why? I don't see its utility, I still have people following me on Bluesky but not here (despite clear instructions and the fact I don't post there)... and in general I'm #TeamFedi all the way. Especially after reading @cwebber's brilliant analysis of Bluesky / ATProto: https://dustycloud.org/blog/how-decentralized-is-bluesky/

I feel a bit awkward saying this because there are many wonderful Fediverse champions who are equally enthusiastic about Bluesky and want it to succeed in parallel to the Fediverse. But my heart is not in it and I'm feeling very skeptical, crypto bro financing and all. When I think of Bluesky, I can't help but think of the fable of the Scorpion and the Frog.

Also: I'm curious to see if my GoToSocial backup file will decrease in size once I remove the bridge. Pre-bridge the backup file was teeny tiny.

Thoughts? Do you have Bluesky people following you via the bridge / do you find it useful?

When I booked my train for #FOSDEM in November I was intimidated: will I feel like a fish out of water, since I'm not a developer?

Around that time @ilja recommended I check out @yunohost.

On Dec 17 I signed up for a VPS, installed #YunoHost and in the span of a month I'm now running:
1) a #GoToSocial instance @elena
2) my own #Pixelfed @ele
3) a #LinkStack
4) a #Ghost blog (upcoming)

So I'm a little less intimidated (but still a newbie).

Excited to connect with so many familiar faces
