#PennedPossibilities How did you come up with the title for your WIP?
I wanted to write an #Odyssey of a cargo space ship with a captain who didn't want to be a captain. The story would of course be called like the ship. So, this ship needed a name.
I didn't want to have a straightforward #ScienceFiction universe like we see it so often: clean, streamlined, functional. Because humantity isn't like that, history isn't like that. There are always fallbacks into earlier eras, idiosyncracies, counterintuitive, illogical bits. It is complex, not simple.
So, the ship would need a name that reflects that. And since it is part of a fleet it needed a name that fit into a naming convention for the rest of the fleet. The most obvious choice is to name a ship after a bird. I looked around and found the herald petrels which are part of the gadfly petrels, so there are a lot of other petrels for the sister ships.
Also, the name sounds somehow strong and a bit scary because of the "Herald", at the same time it echoes the name of its captain Harold Galahad.
The Herald Petrel was born.
