Thousands of working people in New York City now live in shelters, unable to afford apartments despite holding down jobs that pay them $50,000 or more.
@dariana yeah I’m not surprised, I’m not real familiar with New York rents, but I’m pretty sure $50,000 isn’t 3 1/2 times many of them.
I am up in New Hampshire and my last part-time job was for a private landlord who owns some apartment complexes. He had $1200 two bedrooms 1 bath heat included but you couldn’t apply if your income was less than $51,000 a year. To rent the $1600 townhouses you had to have $63,000 in annual income.
In this area a huge problem is that there’s either low income/affordable housing where you’re not supposed to be able to live here if you earn more than 30 or $40,000 or something like that, but if you can’t rent something affordable the only other option Are pseudo luxury apartments where you have to earn $60,000 to qualify to live there. A whole bunch of people get stuck in the middle where they don’t qualify for anything managed and they have to scramble for private landlords who don’t fix things or get creepy.
