There was a time, when I was an apprentice in the air force, that I could honestly name a hundred people who were friends.
Right now, I couldn't name ten.
Which makes me look at the 32, wait, 33 people, who subscribe to my writing newsletter, and feel like this is *cozy*
Then I wonder, at what point will I feel like my newsletter is a commodity, rather than friends?
@screwturn Personally, I don't expect that will ever happen. Let's say in some dream world I have 100K subscribers. Each one of those people would be more than just a "reader". Sure some of them would be looking for the next discount, but the ones who actually read my messages, and especially the ones who reply, they're special people. Maybe I can't be friends with all of them, but they'd be much more than a commodity.
That said, the 20-odd subscribers I currently have are mostly friends, but that predates the newsletter.

ah .. but there is always that *maybe* that some really big influencer will notice your work, and suddenly there you are, with a 100k readers :)
I mean, stranger things have happened, and some of those people with the million sales are neither good writers not nice people. So why not you, eh? :)
摏 @alan@mindly.social@screwturn I submit that if [famous person] says "this is the bestest book ever", I'll get a bump in sales and a pile of followers over on Bluesky (where I plan to broadcast, not converse), but still the people who take the next step and come here or sign up for my newsletter are the ones who are looking for more of a connection.

The one's that sign up for the newsletter are voting to have a closer relationship than just being a reader
