This subject keeps coming up. I'm the one who keeps bringing it up. This is by design. Please stop spreading misinformation to the effect that connecting to a VPN before Tor is inherently dangerous.

I watched Jonah Aragon's video, linked below, when I first started learning about online privacy. I saw it before I found out about a lot of the incorrect ideas he talks about, and I'm thankful I learned those things in that order and not the other way around. He also wrote an article about this, also linked below, which I'd somehow never read until now; it's also fantastic.

I have to wonder where some of these ideas even come from, honestly.

"This is nothing new. Operating on Tor for over 12 years, we knew going in that we would have infrastructure in xx-eyes countries and be subject to potential sniffing.

I'll let you in on a little secret. The time people spend obsessing about hiding from the government puts you in a de facto state of servitude to them. They do not require any form of operation psychological or physical space. Most people have created their own psyop.

If all of this bothers you, cut your fibre line and live in a cave."

I needed to read that, especially now and especially in light of recent events, and I cannot possibly be alone in that regard.

The case for open source software is clear. The software generated is more robust, has better features and keeps evolving unconstrained by budgetary concerns.

That is why open source software is the better choice when it comes to keeping your data private. Whilst the code of the privacy tool may be open, the data is secure - and everyone can verify that in the code. 🔒
