Sam Whited<p>I just applied for a scholarship to the John C. Campbell Folk School for their traditional dance callers week. Not something I had on my bingo card for this year, but apparently I was recommended for it by someone in the local contra scene and invited to apply, so why not? I thought <a href="https://anticapitalist.party/tags/Contra" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Contra</span></a> was beyond my capability to beat, until I watched a single speed run. After watching it, I was able to beat the game on the next try (using the <a href="https://anticapitalist.party/tags/KonamiCode" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>KonamiCode</span></a> to get 30 lives) with plenty of lives to spare. After that I stopped using the code and just played with 3 lives. After a few tries, I beat it with 3 lives. This all happened over the course of a few hours.</p>

People said they enjoyed the music, the callers seemed happy they didn't have to also think about what music to pick, and mostly the dancers looked like they stayed hyped all night! Screwed up a transition on one song and had to end it early, and overreached on another and the dancers had trouble keeping up, but otherwise I think it was a success. However, there's also a new caller who's going to debut a dance and he specifically requested a mashup of Chappell Roan's "Good Luck, Babe!" and "Pink Pony Club". These are in dissonant keys, don't have contra phrasing, the tempo will have to slow *way* down to make it work, and I am not a club DJ. Marc'O 🕹️ ¯\_ (ツ) _/¯<p>Iron Meat – Konami’s Contra series showed obvious influence from R-rated movies like Predator, Aliens, and Rambo, but the games were still fundamentally aimed at kids, so the end results were always a little sanitized.
