What will the new Pope be like? He’s chosen to be called Leo: that’s no accident | Catherine Pepinster (Guardian, 2025-05-08)

------

"Cardinal Robert Prevost has chosen the name Leo XIV – and if you’re a papal Leo, you tend to be a reformer at the progressive end of Catholicism. That Prevost has decided to become Leo XIV will make Catholics think immediately of the last Leo – Leo XIII – and his 1891 encyclical or teaching document, Rerum Novarum, which outlined workers’ rights to a fair wage, safe working conditions and the rights of workers to belong to trade unions. If Pope Francis was the People’s Pope, then Leo XIV is all set to be the Workers’ Pope."

10 minutes, a Chinese YouTuber goes around a "Shein village" near where she lives - a place where there's a lot of garment manufacture for Shein.
If the wages seem really low and the working hours really bad, and you think "Oh wow Shein is so bad" you'll be correct but also not be delighted to learn it's only the worst, not very far from average!

Pay workers, purchase with care, keep the things you love, mend.

actionnetwork.orgTell the House to pass the bipartisan Protect America’s Workforce Act and defend federal workers’ rights Donald Trump dealt a blow to federal workers when he signed an Executive Order on March 27th that denied federal employees their collective bargaining rights. Under the order, employees at more than 30 federal agencies would lose their collective bargaining rights. Some of these agencies include the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, the Office of Refugee Resettlement, and the Administration for Children and Families. These same agencies are already under harsh attack due to the Trump administration summarily firing tens of thousands of employees. Without collective bargaining, the employees who keep their jobs will be left in an even more precarious situation. Unlike other unions, federal unions have limited bargaining rights—they can’t go on strike, and they can’t bargain over things like wages or benefits because these are laws set by Congress. What federal unions can do is help workers address workplace issues without fear of retaliation and without disrupting the work of the federal government. Bipartisan legislation has been introduced in the House that would nullify Trump’s executive order and restore the bargaining rights of thousands of federal employees—the Protect America’s Workforce Act. We need to demand that House leadership bring it to the floor for a vote immediately. With Trump and Elon Musk taking a chainsaw through government agencies, workers need protection from retaliation now more than ever. Click “Start Writing” to send a message to your representative demanding Congress pass the Protect America’s Workforce Act now.

Covid is a worker’s rights issue. Workplaces need to implement clean air standards, paid time off and provide free respirators.

We’re in a mass disabling event, and governments told people it was safe to “go back to normal” to prop up the economy.

Covid isn’t over. It’s still killing & disabling people.

This May Day, demand clean air & Covid mitigation.
