This. A thousand times this. This blog post barely scratches the surface. I've just spent an entire working day just getting my project back to where it was this morning. A whole day with no progress, I should be fired.
My job is fucking insane, and I'm starting to hate every minute of it.

0x1 · The Insanity of Being a Software EngineerIs something I think about often because I can’t help but wonder if most other jobs are like this.

"Why the Post Office paid £600m to stay shackled to the faulty Horizon system

Not owning crucial code has meant it has been unable to replace the system that led to a scandal."

A multi-national distributor & manufacturer I'm currently porting a system for has done exactly this. They don't know from where, in their colossal finance & ops data warehouse, the exact data for this system comes from and they don't have the code. Dumb mistake.

Said this to a colleague in work Slack just now:

"I do have to say (if we can pause to pat ourselves on the back here) that I think you and I (and [x]) have done a really good job at designing things to be simple, only adding complexity when really necessary, and also fighting like hell to *avoid* adding complexity."

I've decided to start preparing for a career change. I've been working as a developer for about 6 years now and I used to really enjoy it but now I am pretty much just reviewing gpt code from vibe coding colleagues and it has sucked all the fun out of the job.

I always enjoyed the process of making software and solving problems. Now it's all just copilots and LLM assistants 😫 great for technological advancements and productivity but pretty boring.

AI has kinda ruined everything digital for me 😅 so I'm going to try to move into a more outdoorsy role. Gardening or something.

Great example when software/data engineering lack of skills will cost you dozens thousands dollars on a few clicks in #Cloud. Senior #Data Engineer in undisclosed company changed Cloud Storage Lifecycle Policy and caused 600 milion files from Standard Storage to Tier 2 Archive, which caused cost about $60k. Those fancy hidden costs in cloud. BTW this is hidden in Google cost calculator under advanced section. #dataengineering #Software #softwaredevelopment
