zeroes.caMaggie Maybe (@maggiejk@zeroes.ca)@Nerde@beige.party when Covid rolled in I was working for a private landlord who owned a few apartment complexes he inherited from his dad. As far as private landlords go he wasn’t the worst, there were tenants that had been there since the 90s who were paying half of what he was charging new tenants for market rent, so at least he rewarded loyalty unlike most of them.
BUT the reason I bring this up is because one of the maintenance men was telling me that our boss used some Covid funds to buy a house that he’s now renting to that Maintenance man. The guy figured out that the rent he’s being charged is exactly the PITI for the property.
It was a good deal for what he’s getting, he was just very aware of the fact that he should have been able to buy that house but he couldn’t because he didn’t have a lump sum down payment from the Covid funds because he wasn’t a business owner who could scam Covid funds.
And because our boss had the ability to borrow the $ now his tenant/employee is paying off his house for him. A house that person was prohibited from purchasing himself because he “can’t afford it”, except he can because he’s literally paying for all of it every month.
The price of contesting landlord power, even through the narrow channel of legal remedy, is now being passed back to the tenant.

Rents are expensive, I know. Corporate landlords are a scourge. But get this: I have, on my 40-acre farm, a 2nd dwelling, 750 sq ft 1 BR house often rented to farm help. In the last 3 months, I've put on a new roof + gutters, interior paint, heat and appliance repairs, electrical work, and this week, a new sewer pipe. Grand total: $18,000. There is no amount of rent I could or would charge to cover that plus taxes, insurance, and outdoor work like fallen tree removal last week.
