Meanwhile meanwhile, I've still got seven days of annual leave to book for the year and I'm tempted by a week's cruise in July on a ship we've cruised on before, to ports in Span and Portugal we've visited before, which isn't the way we usually do things. We like new places and experiences. However, we do know someone who's got a job working on the ship as an entertainments host and feel like surprising her on her first contract.

A slow and short cruise overnight from Buenos Aires in 2016 brought us along the Río de la Plata to Uruguay's capital, Montevideo. Here, we began an organised excursion with a stop at Plaza Independencia, the main square. The sculpture in the centre is that of José Gervasio Artigas, a national hero considered to be the father of the nation of Uruguay. His remains are interred below the sculpture in a guarded mausoleum.

After a lunch break in an old theatre (the best steak we've ever eaten) accompanied by a tango show on stage at eye level right next to our table (superb) we headed off for the final bit of sightseeing in Buenos Aires before returning to our ship.

This is La Boca, a district of brightly coloured houses and shops, many decorated with figurines outside and on balconies, and filled with artists and tango dancers. Lots of street art decorated every surface in the area and it's a must-see part of Argentina's capital if you're visiting for the first time.

For our first landing we stop at Enderby Island to admire the flora, the beautiful cliffs, and the abundant sea lions. It's a wet, windy day and I am almost blown off the boardwalk a number of times, but it's great to be off the ship and surrounded by lush vegetation.

The first day of our voyage was spent at sea.We were given parkas and boots, and our clothes were decontaminated. Briefings covered zodiac operations and an overview of our voyage. In the evening, I went to the bridge to look out at the sea before us, and had the good fortune to meet the officer on watch for the night.

Our third cruise commenced in 2016, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of our first date. This was our first time heading south of the equator and we flew down to join the ship, Star Princess, in Buenos Aires. We would spend an entire day docked in Argentina's capital which meant we could go off on a full day's excursion before the cruise properly began.

This is the view from Buenos Aires on the aft of the ship. The raised structure on the right is the nightclub, accessed via a travelator, and it's where we spent every evening into the early hours.

This is the Salmon Eye in Hardangerfjord, Norway. It's both a floating art installation and a Michelin-starred restaurant with the sort of cost for a meal you'd expect from a Michelin-starred restaurant in Norway.

Have you ever seen pins on a cruise ship? For as long as I remember, the huge cruise ships in the Nordic area used to have really good arcades onboard. Always the latest vids and pins and naturally a full selection of gambling machines.

A lot of people go, "wait, isn't it impossible to play with the ship rocking and stuff?" and the answer is no, the ships are so big and well stabilised the sea is really not an issue, but the games were still bolted onto the deck!

But with often rowdy audience, the games had some noticeable mods done to them. The coin door had a beefy steel plate with more reinforcements inside.

They also had a credit board they used on simpler games to set the game price. I guess they just had those in every game.

The playfield usually plastic upper trim was now stainless steel and the bottom speaker had a protector on it too.

They had a keyed power switch so they could be turned off if the ship docked somewhere the operator couldn't legally do business in.

Currently sat on the ship back at Tilbury as we wait for clearance to leave, find our cases, load them up in the car, and start the 2-hour drive back home. It's been a great cruise on an old, small ship with tons of personality and some gorgeous decor in the lounges.
