The first of the Five Precepts is an undertaking not to kill. This precept provides a mirror for that which is violent in the human mind and wants to expunge anything displeasing.

In giving us a moral structure that we can give ourselves up to, this first precept makes it easier for us to notice that impulse of ill-will as it first arises.
And by providing us with an ethical standard by which we can judge our actions, the first precept protects us from harming sentient beings.
If we can stop ourselves from impulsively or deliberately harming ourselves and other beings, goodwill can arise.
This is very important, since a heart of goodwill is the foundation for enlightenment in the Buddhist tradition.

The thought ‘I am’ is an impermanent condition. The thought ‘I am not’ is an impermanent condition.

Thoughts, memories, consciousness of thinking, the body itself, our emotions – all conditions change.
In the practice of meditation, we have to be quite serious, brave and courageous, to really investigate, to dare to look at even the most unpleasant conditions in life, rather than to seek escape in tranquility or forget about everything.
In Vipassanā, the practice is one of looking into suffering; it’s a confrontation with ourselves, with what we think of ourselves, with our memories and our emotions, pleasant, unpleasant or indifferent.
In other words, when these things arise and we are aware of suffering, rather than rejecting, repressing or ignoring it, we take the opportunity to examine it.

Unlike the thinkers of his day, the Buddha focused not on what gets reborn, but on how the process happens.

That’s because discussions of what gets reborn go nowhere, but the ability to understand the steps in the process can help you negotiate it skillfully, either to take on a new becoming in a good world, or to go beyond the process of becoming entirely.
The process depends on craving. Consciousness, which is also a process, does not need a body to continue functioning. It can cling to craving, and craving will take it to a new becoming.
This is how consciousness survives the death of the body. If the craving is relatively skillful, it will lead to a good destination; if not, it will lead to a bad one.
