No.4 in my antiques series:

Ale glasses

Due to the interminable wars with the French, drinking French wine was seen as unpatriotic in the Georgian period, so better-off Brits drank strong ale instead. At around 10% ABV, this was drunk from conical ale glasses, capacity about 4 ounces.
The glass shown below dates from about 1790-1800. At 6 inches tall, it is a 'short ale', meaning it has a shorter stem than a true ale glass but a longer one than a 'dwarf ale'.

I kinda-sorta wanted this 1947 FM 70-10 War Department Field Manual for Mountain Operations at yesterday’s auction, but so did two other guys. Alas.

As a North Dakotan, I’ve always been interested in learning how to operate a mountain.

But good new! It’s available on the Internet Archive so I can still learn how to make an improvised cableway for lowering command reconnaissance vehicles!

No.3 in an occasional series on antiques.

Jugs (pitchers) with a contrasting glaze to the neck and the top of the handle.
This style is associated with Doulton Lambeth (Royal Doulton from 1901) and the salt glazed jug with the green neck is a good example from 1902. My favourite, though, has got to be the blue Langley Pottery 1.5 pint jug (1930's) with the daffodils. I've never seen a blue glaze I like better. See alt text for more info.
