Just a man roasting a hot dog on a burning bee hotel. These cheapo ones made with bamboo cannot be cleaned and thus are only good for propagating mites and Houdini flies. #InsectHotel #BeeHotel #bees #insects #pollinators #canada #vancouver #bamboo https://www.instagram.com/p/CHJMuEvnKTy/

One of my favorite flowers, the very ephemeral bloodroot, Sanginaria canadensis has made its appearance. Native to most of the eastern half of the US and southern Canada, it’s an early spring pollen and nectar source for native pollinators. The seeds are dispersed by ants.
The eastern monarch butterfly population has nearly doubled, occupying 4.42 acres in central Mexico's forests this winter, up from 2.22 acres last year. While this is a positive development, the population remains below the long-term average.
Additionally, forest degradation in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve's core zone decreased by 10%, indicating improved habitat conditions.

Looks like good pollination on the apricot tree even though I'll probably remove all but a few if they set.
Without my glasses I thought that this was some weird dirt clump on the floor that I was about to sweep up, until I saw it moving (very slowly, I don't think it can fly right now). It's having a drink of sugar water from a jar lid and hopefully it'll perk up.

One much warmer day later…
Same cluster of buds on the pear tree. Most of the buds here are open, and 1/3 of the buds overall on the tree.
Pollinators have noticed!
Big bumblebee rushing buzzily through the undergrowth. If I was childish I would say it sounds like it’s farting, but I won’t because I’m a very mature and responsible person. #bee #garden #wildlife #nature #pollinators
A short bee video after lots of beekeeping things today. Not a lot of pollen but it only got up to 53F/12C today and no sun until late afternoon.
Lots of bees gathering water after the rain, I guess this leaf provided something tasty.
@Pollinators I looked it up to be sure and it's the Lorenzo Langstroth's 1861 book Hive and the Honey Bee, which is the third edition. It was not in the first edition.
Copy of it here:
@firephoto And thank you to the 1853 Hive and Honey Bee book. #pollinators.

A rather beautiful shining gold hoverfly. Epistrophe eligans.
The season for insects is now well under way and dramatically different than last year.
