Res. 296, settled the argument of who was considered an employee for purposes of Social Security coverage. On this day, H.J. Res. 296 was passed, after public assistance amendments increasing federal assistance to states were added, by a vote of 74 to 6. On June 14, 1948, President Truman vetoed H.J. Res. 296, saying that "If our Social Security program is to endure, it must be protected against these piecemeal attacks. Coverage must be permanently expanded and no employer or special group of employers should be permitted to reverse that trend by efforts to avoid the burden which millions of other employers have carried without serious inconvenience or complaint." On June 14, 1948, President Truman's veto of H.J. Res. 296 was overridden in the House by a vote of 298 to 75.<br><a href="https://www.ssa.gov/history/reports/crsleghist3.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">ssa.gov/history/reports/crsleg</span><span class="invisible">hist3.html</span></a></p><p><more in comments></p><p>More Social Security history: <a href="https://www.ssa.gov/history/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">ssa.gov/history/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a> & <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/SSAHistGWC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SSAHistGWC</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/SocialSecurity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SocialSecurity</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/History" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>History</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Disability" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Disability</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Retirement" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Retirement</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Medicare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Medicare</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Unemployment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Unemployment</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/insurance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>insurance</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/heatlhcare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>heatlhcare</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/NewDeal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewDeal</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/OTD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OTD</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/SSDI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SSDI</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/OASDI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OASDI</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/equity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>equity</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/justice" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>justice</span></a> Social Security Administration</p>
