Some of the most sacred places for American Indian nations are located in national parks, but access to their holy ground continues to be contentious. Though the National Park Service has gradually become more responsive and cooperative, full recognition of Indigenous sacred places is still a long way off.

Why do I ask? Well—Did you know—**all national parks have been turned over to a DOGE guy?** Yep, in the middle of the night on April 17, an order went out, and so far it’s not getting much attention.

I just learned of it this morning, so I’ve been trying to track it down.

Heather Cox Richardson mentioned it in her substack today, citing Wes Siler, who goes on to cite this source:

I guess it is Earth Day today? I thought that was back on 4/20 to be honest, I got confused I suppose. It was sometime around now. Remember back almost a decade ago when Alt NPS started up? I drew this to celebrate them. The map geeks among us can probably figure out where the topo is from, which National Park.

A rounded corner square design bordered in deep forest green and lighter green as the base color inside. Overlayed are squiggly lines of the deep green and some in gray, they represent contours of topography. There is blue running through as well, representing water. Along the water is small text in same blue "Established 2017" On top of this layered background are the letters ALT NPS. The A is brown, with two grizzlies locked standing on their hind legs to make the A shape The L is brown, in the shape of a wolf howolling at the moon, it's body makes the upright part of the L and the tail makes the horizontal part. The T is brown, in the shape of a moose head. Antlers form the cross piece of the T and head itself forms the vertical section. The N is represented by gray snow capped mountains, with help from a deep green forest scape in front to make the N more obvious as it holds the negative space underneath the first peak. The P is a continuation of the forest from N, with a rising Redwood proud and tall, a yellow sun peaking out for the curved upper part of the P. The S is a an extension of a river from the background, pulled into the foreground and completing the scene with the N and P...mountains, forest, sea.

July 5, 1983: The next mountain after Lewis was Bearfence. The Appalachian Trail skirted its rough, rocky crest, but a loop trail ran over it. The craggy summit was becoming overgrown with small, gnarled trees, but several projecting rock outcrops nearby looked southward along the Blue Ridge and westward over a broad chunk of the Shenandoah Valley.

We are standing on an outcrop of very light gray rock with patches of dark brown and light green lichen. The sky is clear but hazy and gray. Objects grow increasingly bluish and indistinct with distance. To our right, a two-lane highway that has just traversed a pass through this mountain and the next winds down and around that next mountain. The forested ridge below us block the view of that pass. Mostly forested foothills and hollows slope down into a very large valley beyond. You can barely make out the shapes of farm fields and strips of forest in the near portion of that valley. Everything past that disappears into the haze.

It took awhile, but I finally finished the video for my camping trip in Olympic National Park. We lucked out in finding a site at Kalaloch and were rewarded with an amazing sunset, the milky-way, and a peaceful stroll through the Hoh Rainforest.
