This is an appreciation post for @ThunderComplex as he steps down as moderator for the Musicians.Today instance. I'm sad to see him go, but so grateful for his time and dedication (and those lightning-fast report responses).
Honestly, the only reason the fediverse is a half-decent place is mods like him. Human, actual-intelligence actors who care. Thank you all!

We had this image commissioned a while ago with the idea that the site would have some corny, early 2000s CSS weather effects that matched the local #nyc weather. Swapping out the banner (at https://masto.nyc/about) for this "rainy day" variant would have been part of that.
Then, much later, I realized, like, 95% of masto.nyc users use an app and would never see it ;____;
maybe one day I'll go through with it if I need a rainy day activity

Même s'il est dit que ces messages ne sont pas sécurisés - chiffrés -, c'est un autre problème que de les trouver via un moteur de recherche....
Merci d'y remédier, je crois que c'est très nécessaire.

My mastodon instance doesn’t have elastic search. I very much would like to search posts that I have replied to. If I export my archive, I get the replies, but not the content. I assume my instance probably has a cache of what I’m looking for.
Is writing a crawler that hits my own instance to load the status that I replied to for every reply in my archive a good idea? I would work with my admin and keep the rate limit low as not to bring it down.
Is there a better way?

We are currently experiencing intermittent network degradation and are working to isolate the problem and resolve it.
No significant outage is expected during this period, however you may experience occasional increases in latency and rare dropped connections.
This degradation is unrelated to our recent Peertube rollout, and is likely to be caused by degraded cabling. Once we have isolated where the issue is occurring, we will replace any components requiring replacement, test and monitor the results and update this incident accordingly.
First rule of Fediverse administration: no matter how many you suspend, Nicole's (the Fediverse Chick) accounts will multiply like Gremlins.
Harasser, Spammer and Targeting people
Watchout from this person NorVegan, He is harassing a transwoman called d4rkness at cyberpunk.lol and spamming this message every time:
"This individual is engaging in scam-like behavior and has repeatedly ignored requests to stop spamming the vegan group with irrelevant e-begging posts that have nothing to do with veganism. Please refrain from donating in order to discourage this behavior."
D4rkness stated on her main account that "Mutual aid is never spam." So, please block/suspend norvegan at zotum.net or suspend the whole instances
Is there a way that we can automatically limit or suspend the server with out looking on the reports from other admins?
We have now successfully upgraded to v4.4.0-alpha.4+mementomods-2025-04-06 @mementomorisocial. This upgrade contains latest and newest version.
The branch is now synced and up-to-date and 89 changes ahead the last version which was v4.4.0-alpha.4+mementomods-2025-03-22.

Spam Alert
Hey everyone, heads up—I’ve been getting weird DMs from someone calling herself “Nicole,” and it’s starting to feel like a full-blown crypto scam. She popped up out of nowhere on my old account (which I haven’t touched in months), and now she’s straight‑up asking for Bitcoin or whatever “for urgent personal reasons.”
At first, I thought it was just some random fan or troll, but the second message was all about “please send crypto” and “I really need this, trust me.” If you reply even once, I bet she’ll double down with more pressure or guilt trips. And let’s be real—once you send crypto, there’s zero chance of getting it back.
So here’s what I did (and what you should do if she shows up in your inbox):
1. Ignore it. Don’t even type “no thanks.”
2. Block her. Seriously, click that block button ASAP.
3. Report the message. Most platforms have a “report spam” feature—use it.
4. Tighten your privacy. If you haven’t already, switch your DMs to “friends only” or “followers only.”
I know these scammers can sound convincing, but don’t let them reel you in. Spread the word—let’s keep each other safe and not let “Nicole” or anyone like her prey on us. Stay safe out there!
Please don't compare the criminal actions of the #Netanyahu regime to nazi crimes. I ask because:
1 - Decent jews with no blood on their hands can feel humiliated with no reason
2 - Some actions of Netanyahu's gang (like using AI to destroy protected targets and kill civilians out of an algorithm calculation) are MORE cynical and inhuman than nazi crimes, and we should find new words to describe this new evil.
3 - As #Mastoadmin I have my time wasted by warmongers weaponizing antisemitism.

Are you an admin of an instance and curious to know just how much stuff your instance downloads that no one pays attention to? Let you perform a periodic status cleanup and admire the results. Mine tells me my database should be a lot larger than it is. #MastoAdmin
Is anybody else struggling with S3 storage these past few days?
Almost all media files are "Preview not available" and my logs are full of lines like this:
WARN -- : Error storing media attachment: Failed to open TCP connection to mastodon-constellation.s3.af-south-1.amazonaws.com:443 (execution expired)
My config hasn't changed and I haven't even looked at my AWS console in weeks, so pretty certain that I haven't changed anything.
If you run a public server with special features such as extended post lengths, additional poll options, rich text etc, you might want to mention these in your server's description.
A lot of new people join big stock Mastodon servers and aren't sure about the differences between servers. Something very concrete like longer posts is a really good way of getting them thinking about moving.
It's not the only reason to move, but it's a good way to get their attention!
