Hmmm. Not sure where I saw to use Rufus (first version of earlier post mistakenly said grub... that's something different) but the Linux Mint install guide suggests to use Etcher. I started with Rufus. It had a lot of options. Then it complained about having install files for some old version and needing to download more stuff. See image. I had a bad feeling so I went to Etcher. Way easier! Like 3 steps. Took maybe 8 mins to do its thing in total. By now I guess I have a bootable flashdrive. OK that really is it for today. Maybe I'll try booting tomorrow. We'll see. 😬 #LinuxMint #LinuxCurious

Downloaded rufus and the ISO.

Going through the integrity and authenticity checks... an interesting experience. Hello PowerShell!

I think this optional [but important(?)] I and A process is where most Windows users would check out.

Sure am thankful for the guide linked below which is on the LinuxMint install page. While it doesn't specifically indicate you actually need to install GNU Privacy Guard (gpg4win.org), I eventually figured it out.

Will continue on my #LinuxCurious journey... later.

EDIT: Changed grub to rufus

I spent an hour or so poking around with a virtualized Linux Mint desktop thanks to some company called onworks.net. It was fun to sort of dip my toes before pulling the trigger. My #LinuxCurious journey continues!

If you are curious, you can poke around, too. The have a lot of stuff you can take for a spin, but here's a link to Linux Mint.

I’ve just switched an old iMac to run Linux Mint (Cinnamon) and it’s great. Starting to want to dig a little deeper into it I guess it comes with a C compiler.

Does it also have a Python interpreter? Anything else? (During a recent update the word Perl kept flashing across the screen)

I've just removed my external monitor. Glitching problem solved! Lebowski - the "Dude" - would be proud of me. Taking inspiration from his example, I realized I was being too uptight.

I merely have to turn up all the font sizes a few notches to see things on my laptop's 14" screen.

Maybe I'll install LMDE6 in a week or so (awaiting a new NVMe stick in the mail), to see if the non-Ubuntu kernel might work better with my external monitor.

Replied to JL Johnson :veri_mast:

@User47 We have two laptops. One is running #LinuxMint the other running #LMDE and both look and feel exactly the same. Both distros can trace their root back to #Debian. LMDE just goes straight there not passing through #Ubuntu, like Mint.

Never had a problem with our Brother printer in the last 10 years or so.

The neat thing about #Linux is that it doesn't cost you money to give it a go. Try it and see if it works.

By the way I prefer to use LMDE.

Continuing on my #LinuxCurious journey... I have a label printer that I use pretty frequently and just discovered Brother has support for a few Linux distros. Deb (assuming Debian) Rpm (?!?) and Raspbian. Cool!

You smart Fedi folks overwhelmingly recommend Mint. Any strong feelings on Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) vs the main version? Guessing LMDE might run more business/corp stuffs.

#Debian #trixie #kde has been really decent, however here's my biggest hesitation for desktop use (once it goes stable). I'm grateful that #LinuxMint's great #TimeShift app is now Debian-packaged.

I prospectively formatted my root partition as #BTRFS, wanting to make or revert snapshots in Timeshift. But alas, Debian's installer doesn't automagically create BTRFS subvolumes called "@" and "@home", as would be the case in Linux Mint's installer. Without those subvols being created, then Timeshift can't find those subvols, and complains. So no BTRFS snapshotting/restoring can be done in Timeshift. :bd15:
