Jennifer Ebeling<p><a href="https://mindly.social/tags/December" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>December</span></a> 2, 1759<br /><a href="https://mindly.social/tags/OTD" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>OTD</span></a> James Edward Smith, <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/English" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>English</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/Botanist" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Botanist</span></a>, is born.</p><p>In 1784, after Carl <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/Linnaeus" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Linnaeus</span></a> died, James bought his collection.</p><p>When the <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/King" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>King</span></a> of <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/Sweden" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Sweden</span></a> found out, he tried intercepting the ship before it reached <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/London" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>London</span></a>. But he was too late.</p><p>James founded the Linnean Society, &amp; served as its first President.
