@sand Vaccines work against the specific things they're designed for. Which can be kind of a hit or miss with anything that mutates rapidly. The flu vaccine is based on best guesses for the most common strains for the season. This year it's a pretty good match so many people are not getting sick or not getting as sick.
The Omicron variant of Covid was a mutation that the first vaccines didn't cover well but the booster shot did.
I'm not an expert but covid seems likely to mutate more (1/?)

@sand (2/?) Meaning that we'll probably see more boosters in the future to keep protecting us against the worst the new variants can throw at us.
With common colds, there are so many that it's super possible to just get one after the other. They change from year to year and there are so many that even if your immune system is healthy there's a lot of stuff out there that can take you out.
If your kid is new to (or newly back to) school that may be why. It'll get better!

@terradi thank you for taking the time to reply.

It’s been an exceptionally difficult year for our 5y/o and in turn, us the parents. Seems like we’ve tried everything, masking, vaccines, hand washing, but nothing has helped prevent the cold virus from ripping through the schools and homes.

It’s lead to a lot of sleepless nights, unproductive days at work, depression.

Running out of ideas to keep our little one and us parents healthy and upright for more than a week.

@sand I'm so sorry that's where you are right now. I have a toddler born during the pandemic and she's at home with us. She doesn't go out much and that's the only reason we're not constantly sick with something right now.
If it helps at all, the vaccines are likely preventing you from getting sick or getting super sick. We vaccinate for things like the flu not because it makes you feel awful but because it can send you to the hospital or kill you. It's not common, but it's common enough.

@sand Your pediatrician may have ideas, but it may just be something there's not a lot they can recommend.
I work in a clinic that does immunology and I hear my docs say that a lot about some of the kids we see. It's hard but that first exposure to a lot of peers means a lot of exposure to germs and viruses. It's why new teachers get sick a lot in their first years then get really good at fighting off sicknesses.
