Took home two turnips, and here are the rest of yesterday’s haul. I’m very thankful. 🎃🌶️🫛

On the grayish kitchen counter, two mini pumpkins, two okras, one small yellow banana pepper, nine jalapeño peppers, and two small purple string beans are laid out neatly for a photo. Mini pumpkins are usually known as gords in the United States. They’re the size and color of the oranges. They’re sweet upon baked or steamed.

There are many cottontails, voles, and mice live in the community garden. And we can only tend to the plot once or twice a week. So we grow whatever does well.

I put a high security fence around some okras yesterday. Who knew bunnies love okra leaves?!🌱😋🐰👀😁 we’ll see…

After the first jalapeño was bit into by some unfortunate critter who likely regretted it, no one disturbs them now. 😂🌶️💚

I put the 2-foot-tall wire mesh fence around three okra plants to protect them from getting nibbled. I need to get another one in place for the other plants that have low cage around them. When we got this plot several years ago, I laid bricks we got from recycling center on the isle. We use the biodegradable weed block cloth in the veggie beds.

Don’t worry, the garden and my plot offer more than they can eat during the summer. 🌿🍀🐇🐀🐿️


A young cottontail is eating lettuce in one of the wood-framed veggie beds in my plot, next to a giant green onion. The bunny glances this way as if to say, “thank you!”
A chipmunk has found something delicious in the next plot over! She sits in the corner atop the piles of garden supply (wood & plastic things), holding the food with both of her little paws and eating.

One more.

For unknown reason, all the transplanted cucumber and summer squash seedlings died this summer. 😭

And what I thought to be some volunteer summer squash turned out to be imposters that didn’t get any flowers. So, I got rid of them.
Underneath the tangled vine mess, the turnips were doing ok! (right pic)

Then I squee’d to find a summer squash seedling emerging in the other bed, which I literally emptied the entire seed packet into the soil last week. *grateful*🌱

In the top left corner, I circled the little summer squash seedling with a yellow heart. It mainly shows you the turnip bed where there were pseudo summer squashes. I’ve labeled “some kind of mint” on the bottom left corner, and weeds on the bottom right.
