Some tips for anyone new to Mastodon!
1). Write an introduction post for yourself! These can be pinned to the top of your profile or put in your bio.
2). Follow Hashtags. This is the best way to discover other accounts. Of course I recommend #medlibs but also #librarian #librarians #openaccess and so on. Posts with followed hashtags will automatically be added to your timeline.
3). Edit posts! Yep, you can edit your posts on here
4). Private mentions. There’s no separate messaging system to send a private message. Instead, tag someone else with an @ and set the message to only be viewable by those mentioned in the post.
5). Use lists! You can added followed accounts to any list, and you can set it so the account only appears when reading that list. Useful for any official orgs or news sites.
6). Boost (i.e. retweet) posts from others. Favoriting (i.e liking) is good, but boosting allows discoverability.
@libraryvines I saw this description of the difference between boosts, favorites, and bookmarks helpful:
- Boost: hey everyone, see this cool toot!
- Favorite: hey OP, this is a cool toot!
- Bookmark: hey me, don't forget this cool toot!
I can't remember who originally shared this description, but it was super helpful when I was #NewHere
