The tallest building in Belize is 1,300 years old. This is the main pyramid at #Caracol, an ancient Mayan city. It may not look so tall from here, but there are 3 more pyramids on top that you can't see from the bottom!
... ...
This is also the biggest city #Belize has ever seen -- way bigger than current Belize City in both area and population!
... ...
Caracol also played a huge role in history, defeating their mighty neighbor #Tikal in 562 AD.
@dk23 When occupied, what was its use or were its uses?
@davey
Thanks for your question! Like a lot of Mayan pyramids, this was both a ceremonial site & a royal tomb. But unusually, there's enough space & structures at the top that it appears to have also been a royal residence.
@dk23 Have researches found any evidence supporting this use, such as DNA from food detritus or human wastes?
I have the vague sense that in some cultures, tombs may have been treated as though the entombed people would live on in them,
@davey
Interesting question. I don't actually know what evidence they base that on, it's just what the guide told me when we were there.
