#January 26, 1893
#OTD Winifred Welles, American #Poet, is born.
In her dark #Ballad, “Miss Calkins & the #Centaur,” a woman kills a #Beast while blackberry-picking.
"So far from home, so close to harm,
The #Spinster's thoughts, though stiff with fears,
Recalled the basket on her arm
& that it held her #Garden shears."
Miss Calkins keeps the murder a secret & the #Poem ends:
"Where jellies glistened, glassed & clear,
W/ #Apple-gold & #Currant-flame
No somber #Blackberry gleamed that year."
