Robert planned to feature 70 exotic in their habitats, but he ran out of money. Even unfinished w/ 28 plants, the work is stunning.

The most famous engraving is the night-blooming . The takes up most of the scene w/ the ruins of a castle in the background. The is known as "The Queen of the Night."

The Dragon Arum for The Temple of Flora. The flower is foul-smelling but spectacular in appearance with its velvety black spathe and shiny deep-maroon spadix. Philip Reinagle illustrated it.
“The Night-Blooming Cereus”, from Robert John Thornton’s Temple of Flora, 1807. The cactus is a tall climbing cactus that may approach 10 feet. It is three-ribbed and has black spines along green to yellow stems. It is an untidy jumble of limbs and needs pruning. The blooms are quite fragrant. The flowers open after the sun sets and close when the sun rises. The blossom is yellow centered, with waxy, creamy-white petals followed by a red-orange, short-spined elliptical fruit about three inches long. Philip Reinagle illustrated it.
Auriculas (Primula auricula), also commonly called mountain cowslip or bear's ear, for Robert John Thornton's "Temple of Flora" (1807). The auricula primrose is a hardy, spring-flowering perennial with umbels of large, flat, richly-colored flowers ranging from maroon-carmine, coral pink, and deep orange, to maroon-black with primrose yellow centers. Philip Reinagle illustrated this with the dark black & yellow colors.
Large Flowering Sensitive Plant from Robert John Thornton's The Temple of Flora (1799-1807). The sensitive plant has delicate, fern-like leaves and light purple flowers that resemble small pom-poms. Young plants grow upwards but quickly develop an outward creeping habit.
